Guide to emax

What are Emax crowns?

Emax are special crowns – and their special because they’re made from lithium disilicate, which is one of the strongest dental crowns you can get.

The material is known for its superior strength as well as its appealing aesthetics – making it a popular restorative choice.

  • Tougher and more durable.
  • Newest type of crown and often the priciest.
  • Material harvested for its translucent colour.
  • Lithium disilicate glass – an all ceramic system.
  • Porcelain can be layered on top for a very realistic looking tooth.
  • Best for anterior crown placement.
  • Lasts between 10-15 years depending on treatment.
What can Emax do?

Emax fix broken and damaged teeth that are often beyond repair and cannot be saved by dental fillings or inlays.

That said, Emax crowns are also used to treat missing teeth, discoloured teeth, crooked teeth, and severely decayed teeth. Plus, they’re the perfect replacement to replace old porcelain fused to metal crowns that show unsightly metal lines.

Limitations

In the case where you need multiple crowns, Emax is not recommended in this area and in treatments like dental bridges to replace multiple missing teeth.

When choosing an Emax crown as your restoration, patients should know that Emax is not recommended for heavy biting forces.

So, if you have a habit of grinding your teeth (bruxism), then we would advise against Emax as it might not be able to sustain such heavy forces – even in the front of the teeth.

Emax crowns are metal free

Emax are preferred for their translucency.

Like porcelain crowns, Emax crowns have slightly translucent properties, which means it can come to close to matching your natural teeth.

So, if you’re researching which type of crown is recommended for your visible smile, then Emax crowns should certainly be a contender.

*If you’re trying to choose between Emax and zirconium, you should note that the only noticeable difference is that Emax is more translucent.

Emax will work perfectly when placed on the front visible teeth, as this isn’t an area that typically exerts heavy forces when chewing. However, you should avoid trying to place them on the back molars (posterior teeth) as this is where masticatory forces are heavy.

Placing Emax crowns on back teeth is a debatable topic. If a patient wants Emax, we can mould the material to be sturdy enough to withstand biting pressure, but it will depend on your lifestyle and any pre-existing conditions.
