Oral surgeon specialists and sedation dentists in London

As experienced sedation dentists in London, we know more than most how upsetting dental phobia can be – and how being an anxious patient can make undergoing treatment a stressful and difficult process.

For our patients, who cannot be soothed with regular relaxation techniques and need to undergo longer, complex and often essential procedures like implant surgery, we can offer oral sedation as well as intravenous (IV) sedation.

COST OF SEDATION

Sedation is an additional cost, usually charged at £350 per hour for IV sedation and £130 for oral.

IV SEDATION

Conscious deep sedation that makes patients feel relaxed and at ease. More.

ORAL SEDATION

An alternative to IV sedation, oral sedation comes in pill form or, more typically, gas and air. More.

NERVOUS PATIENT INFO

If you’re anxious, we understand there may be additional things you need to understand beforehand. Talk to us.

Pain management & tension relief

Sedation dentistry is appropriate for patients who have serious dental fears, experience dental anxiety or who are particularly nervous about booking a certain surgery due to the perceived levels of pain.

We understand as sedation dentists that each person is different and so are their pain thresholds – what we might describe as pain-free, you might perceive as hugely painful based on previous negative experiences. That said, sedated dental treatments are safe and accessible to those who need it.

We offer two types of conscious sedation:

  • IV sedation
  • Oral sedation

Both of which will make you feel so relaxed that you might drift off during your treatment.

With both sedative types, patients will remain conscious and responsive, with no adverse effects typically associated with these treatments. In fact, many patients have little to no memory of the procedure.

oral sedation

Oral sedation is another form of conscious sedation, where the dentist will give you a sedative medication in pill form an hour before surgery begins.

Typically, the medication used for oral sedation is Halcion, which is in the benzodiazepine family. However, medication can vary and also include zaleplon and lorazepam.

When opting for oral sedation, nervous patients should bear in mind that the effects can make them quite groggy, causing them to fall asleep during their procedure. But you’ll still be responsive and able to communicate with the oral surgeon if necessary.

IV Sedation

avoid risks associated with general anaesthesia

Intravenous sedation describes the process of administering anti-anxiety drugs (typically Midazolan) through your blood during your treatment. The IV sedation will be connected through a canula in your hand and will instantly help you to relax and feel at peace.

IV sedation will work quickly and have fast effects. Most people could fall asleep 15 to 30 minutes after it has been administered.

Once we remove it, you will wake up in 20 minutes and be fully recovered from the sedative effects within six hours.

Even though it’s referred to as sleep dentistry, IV sedation does not make you sleep, you will simply feel drowsy and relaxed.

How it's administered

The drug is given through a vein through an extremely thin needle close to the surface of the skin in the back of the hand or arm. The needle is then removed leaving a soft plastic tube called a cannula, which is what the sedation drug will be given through.

What we monitor

Throughout the procedure, a patient’s pulse and oxygen levels will be measured using a pulse oximeter, which will clip onto a finger to measure the pulse and oxygen saturation – this is why it’s important that patients do not arrive wearing false nails or nail varnish.
