Orthodontic FAQs

All your orthodontic questions answered:

How do braces work?

Applying gentle pressure to teeth, braces work by gradually moving teeth into their desired position. Once realigned, to ensure teeth remain in their new position, retainers are used to complete the treatment and must be worn every night for a year for optimal results.

What are all the types of braces?

There are several types of braces, from fixed to removable – and which one you have depends on your bite condition and the severity of your misalignment, alongside what you want and can afford.

Common options are either metal, fixed braces or clear removable aligners. But other cosmetic teeth straightening devices exist, like Six Month Smiles, Inman Aligners and Lingual Braces.

How long do braces take?

How long braces take to realign and move teeth depends on the extent of your problem. For example, minor problems and small gaps can be closed in as little as three to six months, whereas extensive overcrowding issues or overbites will take between 12 and 18 months – with some cases taking two years.

How much do braces cost in the UK?

The cost of your brace treatment will depend on the type you’ve chosen and how long your treatment is expected. With Invisalign, you can get a rough indication of pricing, as the different types of Invisalign, which target different bite problems, are charged differently, for example:

Get a quote. Braces are only available on the NHS for patients under the age of 18, with a clinical need for realignment treatment. Waiting lists might apply. Metal, fixed braces only.
