Porcelain crown guide

Types of porcelain crowns

E-max porcelain

A highly durable, strong ceramic system that’s completely metal-free. Learn more.

Zirconia crowns

A type of porcelain veneer, this ceramic-based crown is in fact much stronger. More.

Porcelain-fused metal

These traditional crowns are superior in strength due to their metal base.

Porcelain crowns vs metal-based crowns

The one limitation of porcelain bonded metal crowns is their aesthetic appeal.

Whilst the white porcelain has great translucent properties and mimics teeth well, the fact the base of the crown is metal can sometimes put patients off. So, in the case of choosing crowns for your front teeth, porcelain bonded metal might not be the right option.

That said, the only upside is that porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns will be much more affordable and cost-effective for patients on a budget. All-ceramic and porcelain crowns at our practice cost the same as PFM; £750 (or £58 per month on finance).

If it’s mostly aesthetic appeal you care about, patients can save money with our other non-metal porcelain crown options, which are tooth-coloured (Emax crowns and Zirconia).

Benefits of a porcelain cap
  • The tooth structure no longer needs to be destroyed to place the crown.
  • The crown will help to preserve a healthy tooth structure.
  • Porcelain is less abrasive compared to other types of crowns.
  • The function of the tooth is restored and the natural bite is reinforced.
  • Porcelain crowns look just like real teeth.
  • Takes only two appointments to position.
  • Ceramic restorations are not as thick and require less drilling.
Replacing old crowns

If you need to replace an old crown, it’s a fairly straightforward process, providing that the remaining tooth structure is stable enough to support a new crown.

There might need to be some preliminary work to ensure there’s no decay building up or no root treatment required – but if the remaining tooth’s structure is adequate to support your new porcelain crown, then you’ll be set to go.

If in the case that your tooth is no longer restorable, we might need to recommend other treatment options that might be more appropriate for your situation instead of a crown, such as a dental implant or bridge.

Porcelain-fused to metal crowns

One kind of porcelain crown we offer here at Mint Dental is made from a metal base with a layer of porcelain bonded to it. What this means for patients is that they can reap the benefits of a strong and durable material whilst still attaining the aesthetics of a white smile.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns have been considered by highly regarded institutes as the gold standard for repairing damaged teeth making them an incredibly popular solution to repair a broken or unsightly tooth.

When choosing a material for their dental crowns, patients can rely on porcelain crowns, as they tick all the boxes for keeping their oral health strong and healthy and being reliable against breaks.

Porcelain crowns look better

Lost a large portion of your tooth structure? Don’t worry. All types of dental crowns will improve and restore your dental function – but the focus is more on aesthetics when it comes to porcelain crowns.

Now, a porcelain crown will be natural-looking on the front, a visible portion of your smile, and whilst it will be strong enough to withstand biting forces in this area, there is a higher chance of them breaking. But this depends on your lifestyle and habits.

On the cosmetic front, porcelain crowns can be easily matched to the colour, shape, and lustre of your natural teeth. Like veneers, they are hailed for their blending capabilities.
