It takes a minimum of three months for the bone to heal around your new dental implant.
Before patients proceed with dental implant surgery, we know patients must understand the various healing stages of implant placement, which, depending on your overall treatment plans, can take between six and twelve months.
If you’re here, you’ll likely know that dental implants are the most modern, realistic tooth replacement option in today’s dentistry.
But as advanced as the method is, don’t feel concerned about the procedure at all. Many of our past patients have been so surprised about how straightforward implant placement is and how little discomfort can be afterwards.
Technological advances in the field paired with detailed preparation beforehand means that the entire process is a relatively minor surgical procedure, which has an UK average 92% success rate.
Additional pre-implant procedures like sinus lifts or bone grafts can increase your treatment length as we will need to wait for these separate procedures to heal before we can place an implant.
Sinus lifts and bone augmentations are recommended for implant patients, who have a diminished amount of bone in their bone caused by tooth loss. Sinus lifts and bone grafts can take up to 12 months to heal properly.
Without the need to restore bone, the implant surgery is fairly straightforward and should take no more than a few hours in our dental office.
That said, your implant is made up of three parts (implant rod, abutment and restoration crown). In the first stage, the implant will be placed and will require 3-6 months to heal perfectly.
Additionally, tooth extractions can also delay implant placement. In some instances they can be done simultaneously and in others, patients will need to wait around 7 weeks for the area to heal.
After dental implant surgery, it will be your responsibility to practice good oral hygiene daily to ensure the optimum implant health. That said, implants need no special care outside of ordinary oral hygiene routines as they look and function just like natural teeth.
To keep problems at bay, patients will need to commit to keeping their teeth and mouth healthy by brushing twice a day and visiting a dentist and hygienist regularly.
Some slight discomfort can be experienced – a feeling often compared to a tooth extraction and you’ll be advised to take it easy for a few days. Otherwise it should cause no disruption to your daily life and routine.
Immediately following the procedure, the dentist will detail instructions on how to look after your mouth to protect the implant site.
Dental implant maintenance tips and aftercare guidance to follow post-surgery. In the long-term dental implants won’t need any special maintenance or care. However, the dentist can advise on certain instruments to prolong the life of your implant.
When you have decided that implants are the right solution for you, the next focus will be on what the implant procedure holds – however, we’d advise also thinking about the immediate and long-term effects and aftercare of your new replacement teeth.
After our implant and gum specialist has conducted a thorough examination of your mouth with radiographs, x-rays and CT scans of your jaw, we’ll be able to accurately assess the condition of your bone.
With the information in hand, we’ll be to plan out a treatment timeline detailing how, where and when your implants will be placed.
Common implant stages look like this:
Following implant placement, patients will experience recovery in two stages. First, you’ll need to allow the surgical site to heal, which can take up to two weeks. The best way to speed up your recovery is by carefully following post-operative instructions like keeping your head elevated, modifying your diet and rinsing with saltwater.
The next stage, is the most crucial as it will defines whether your implant placement will be a success or fail.
Following the first stage (surgery), the implant will be inserted into your jawbone – this is where we will need to take a break from treatment to allow the implant enough time to fuse and heal (a period called osseointegration).
Osseointegration is critical as it will provide a stable foundation for the abutment and final restoration. This healing stage will depend on how your body and immune system reacts (and the number of implants) and can take anywhere from nine weeks to nine months.
Once the implant has successfully fused with the jaw, we’ll ask you to return to the practice to undergo a minor surgery to place the abutment, which will connect the implant to the final restoration (usually a crown).
This stage of healing can delay the final restoration for a further two weeks to a month. Minor swelling and discomfort can be expected following the procedure but is easily managed with OTC medication. Ice packs can be used to minimise inflammation.
EXCELLENT Based on 585 reviews Posted on Maria ThanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I chose Mint Dental Clinic after searching for various dental clinics offering sedation and I had an incredible experience thanks to the entire team!! I am terrified of the dentist with a phobia of needles, and I avoid going for check-ups to the point where I developed a huge amount of cavities. After my teeth were analysed by Dr Patel's team, they identified that some of them needed urgent fillings. As sedation is expensive, the team was helpful and patient in helping me figure out the right financial plan to tackle everything before my teeth worsened, including adding extra teeth cleaning for free! I had IV sedation twice for two rounds of fillings across a month, and each time I was put at ease despite coming in the clinic with intense anxiety. I cried as I sat in the chair with the IV in my arm due to my fear of needles. They were kind and patient, and the nurses / sedationists helped calm down my breathing despite the panic. I was terrified of being 'awake' but not being able to communicate or breathe. The team was very reassuring in those fears and I had a lovely experience where I remained conscious but with amnesia, so I had 0 trauma afterwards since you have no memory of anything! The team made me feel heard and supported without being judged. They made sure my chaperone knew everything before bringing me home, and all of my teeth are healthy without any complications post-appointment. I am now ready for routine work without the intense fear of dentistry and feel much more ready to start any dental work WITHOUT sedation in the very near future!Posted on AndreaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The whole team at Mint, starting from the moment you walk through the door (or call up) are focused on providing excellent care. Great reception team and Orman especially, always goes that extra mile. My dentists (Dr Mehdi and Dr Alves) are very personable, thorough and ensured everything was explained clearly, and only proceeded once I'd understood and was content. Whilst in the chair, both dentists were checking in making sure I was doing ok throughout it all. Then at the end, checked I was happy and offered an open-door to return, for some tweaks if necessary. I am very happy with the results. I always feel completely at ease for my visits, so much so that I look forward to them. Highly recommend! >Posted on Adeoye OmowumiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I’m always impressed with the level of care at Mint Dental Clinic. I’ve had an excellent experience at this dental practice. My hygienist Peter is absolutely brilliant, thorough and incredibly skilled at what he does. He always takes the time to explain everything clearly and makes each visit comfortable. A big shout-out as well to Arman at reception. He’s always friendly, helpful, and efficient, making the whole process from booking to check-in smooth and stress-free. Overall, a fantastic team and a dentist I truly trust. Highly recommend!Posted on Rizwan LimbadaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I inquired about Invisalign's earlier this year at this clinic, as I was quite self conscious of my teeth. I had a very insightful conversation with Arman who gave me a thorough explanation regarding the process, treatment, what to expect results wise, and the cost. This then led me to begin my Invisalign journey, and from start to finish it has truly been seamless, immensely effective, and so beneficial. Dr Sharma did an exceptional job throughout, and helped in understanding the developments to expect, how it occurs, and overall making my experience extremely easy and efficient. The service was immaculate from the receptionists, Dr Sharma and his assistant dentist. Also as of recent, I’ve been getting hygiene checkups by Danica and I must say she has been amazing. She explained the anatomy of my teeth and gums in detail, and made me understand much more about dental hygiene and its cruciality. Overall I have no complaints whatsoever, and will 100% refer this clinic to friends and family, as they produce and prioritise high-quality work and service. Extra shout out to Arman as he’s been extremely helpful, and looked after me very well.Posted on Yassim JamaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I highly recommend this dentist. Dr Patel is an exceptional professional, and my family and I have been attending for many years. Since we moved to the Clinic, even my son, who never liked going to the dentist, now looks forward to his visits. The dental hygienist is also excellent.
