Make implants possible

As local implant dentists in Elephant & Castle, we know all too well the consequences of ignoring gaps in the mouth caused by tooth loss. One crucial consequence of ignoring missing teeth is bone loss – and without stable, healthy bone, you’ll likely be a bad candidate for the revolutionary dental implant procedure.

If there’s one thing we understand after treating hundreds of patients, it’s that additional pre-implant procedure like bone regeneration can often feel unnecessary, not to mention annoying for patients looking for an immediate fix to the gaps in their smile.

And that’s completely understandable, but in conventional cases, placing an implant without sufficient bone is impossible. However, that doesn’t mean to say it can’t be done. Alternative implant methods like All-on-4 or implant-retained dentures either require a small amount of bone in particular areas or not at all.

Dental bone graft FAQs

Bone grafts explained
  • The leading cause of bone loss is tooth loss.
  • When a tooth is lost or extracted, the bone surrounding it recesses due to its absence.
  • The rate of bone loss varies but will always occur unless a procedure is undertaken to reduce and prevent further effects.
  • Sinus lifts are for bone loss in the upper jaw.
Assessing the bone mass

Our specialist dentists will evaluate your bone mass using a CT scan.

Using this advanced X-ray facility means we will see a 3-dimension photo of your bone mass, enabling our dentists to accurately evaluate the bone density, height, and anatomical structure.

In addition, booking a consultation with one of our dental experts in this area means that we can better evaluate your suitability for dental implants and additional procedures you might require.

Why are bone grafts necessary for implants?

As you may know, dental implants are a long-lasting, fixed solution to missing teeth, whether targeting individual tooth lossmultiple or an entire restoration of the upper and lower arches. But a dental bone graft might be needed to ensure your implant has a more substantial chance of success.

The purpose of a bone graft, block graft or bone augmentation in the case of dental implants is to increase the width and height of the bone near the implant site. Our oral surgeon creates a stable foundation for the implant to thrive, ensuring its long-term stability.

The procedure is pretty simple, and here at Mint Dental, you have the added benefit of being in the hands of experts. We have a team of specialist oral surgeons to carry out this procedure, meaning you won’t need to be externally referred to any other practice.

What happens if you don't get a bone graft?

Bone grafts, in traditional, conventional cases, are required to increase the viability of your dental implant because the foundation of a dental implant is bone.

Without sufficient bone mass in the jaw, implantation becomes near impossible. And whilst various factors contribute to an implant’s success, osseointegration is among the most important.

Osseointegration describes a process of healing where the titanium implant can fuse and bond with the bone. Without an abundance of bone mass in this area, osseointegration cannot occur, and the implant will likely fail.

Patients wishing to have dental implants but suffering from bone loss can opt for a pre-implant procedure like bone grafts to increase the mass in the jaw, or they can pursue alternative recommended tooth replacement solutions.

The bone graft procedure

Our expert oral surgeon will perform the bone graft by using graft tissue or alternative materials, which will be attached to the bone area that’s most depleted.

The special bone graft material typically contains collagen and proteins that encourage bone growth. Your bone graft surgery depends on whether you require bone in the upper or lower jaws. A sinus lift may be recommended for patients with insufficient bone in the upper jaw.

Restoring The Volume of Your Jawbone

Have you been told you do not qualify for implant treatment and will likely require a bone graft to receive one?

You have three options. You can either…

  • Let the situation get worse by ignoring it and avoiding treatment altogether.
  • Replenish the bone density in your jaw by receiving a bone graft.
  • Replace missing teeth with alternative implant-based methods that do not require abundant bone (All on 4 for total tooth loss cases).

DENTAL IMPLANTS CAN TRANSFORM YOUR SMILE.

  • Dental implants are the leading tooth replacement recommendation.
  • The incredible implant restorations look and function just like regular teeth.
  • Implants do not encourage bone loss but instead stabilise it.
