Guide to acrylic

What is an acrylic denture?

Acrylic dentures or false teeth are made from medical-grade plastic and sit snuggly on top of gums, or clasp onto remaining teeth to restore missing teeth.

Are acrylic dentures any good?

It’s down to perspective. From a budget point of view, yes. From an oral health point of view, no.

Dentures are actually more cosmetic than functional as they do nothing to address the root of missing teeth, but rather just the aesthetics, which is why patients will continue to experience changes to their gums, jawbone and remaining teeth overtime.

How long does an acrylic denture last?

Acrylic dentures typically last anywhere from 5-10 years. Within this window, the way in which your dentures will fit will change, leading to a loose and uncomfortable fit, which is the reason they require frequent replacement as the gums and jawbone shrink from lack of teeth.

How much do acrylic dentures cost?

Partial acrylic dentures cost from £350. If you need to add a tooth to your partial dentures, the cost is £249, with £45 per tooth thereafter. Complete acrylic dentures for a full mouth of missing teeth cost from £700.

Can you get acrylic dentures on the NHS? Acrylic dentures are available on the NHS and cost from £319.50.

Potential risks, drawbacks and side effects
  • Least comfortable and tolerated
  • Least stable / more movement
  • Least grip and retention
  • Biggest and bulkiest of dentures unless used partially
  • Require more muscle control in the jaw
  • Can break much more easily than alternatives
  • Covers the upper palate, affecting temperature, taste and chewing
  • Bone loss is common
  • Gum shrinkage
  • Facial sagging
Acrylic denture vs flexible denture

Acrylic dentures are not as lightweight or flexible as flexible dentures, but they are cheaper and longer lasting. However, patients prioritising comfort would prefer flexible dentures as they conform to the shape of your gums reducing pressure points and gum irritation.

Your acrylic dentures are hand-made

  • We’re highly qualified and experienced, with specialists on the team
  • Patients can spread the cost with interest-free finance
  • We’re open all week (and late some evenings)
  • Add a tooth to existing denture: from £249 + £45 per additional tooth
  • Same-day or next-day repairs & relines

The process for acrylic dentures can vary, as they work partially and completely. Some patients will have some teeth remaining, which we’ll need to take impressions of; some will require extraction, and some patients will have no teeth at all.

Regardless of your situation, your first appointment with us will involve us collecting the information needed to send your custom measurements and specifications to the dental laboratory. There, your acrylic dentures will be handcrafted.

When your acrylic dentures arrive, we’ll invite you back in to fit them. As they’re so adjustable, we can make any alterations to ensure a comfortable fit.

Depending on your unique circumstances, your acrylic dentures will be attached to your remaining teeth with metal clasps or self-stabilised when no natural teeth remain, relying on suction to stay in place.
