Invisalign Rules – What to Expect Ahead of Treatment

Invisalign Process | Cost | Benefits | Types

You’ll likely know how incredible Invisalign is. However, what you might not yet understand is the level of responsibility. The one thing with Invisalign is that it takes commitment and dedication.

Whilst Invisalign is as simple as wearing your aligners, there are a few rules you will need to abide by to ensure your treatment is a success.

Minimum wear time

You will have to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours a day for the treatment to be effective – and for the fastest results. No negotiations.

The two hours a day you don’t wear your aligner are reserved for eating, drinking and brushing. The success and outcome of your treatment will depend heavily on you wearing your aligners as required, so if you don’t think you’ll be able to comply, you might be better suited to fixed braces.

Never eat or drink with your aligners in

Do not eat or drink anything other than cold water when you have your aligners on. The medical-grade plastic can stain and discolour. Any food and drink will stain the aligner, and you don’t want to ruin them if you want to ensure they stay transparent and invisible.

You can drink water without having to remove your aligners.

You’ll have to brush your teeth after every meal

On top of taking your aligners out to eat and drink, you must brush your teeth after every meal. While you’re doing this, washing your aligner with lukewarm water and giving it a quick brush with toothpaste will also be a good idea.

Again, this is to prevent your aligners from staining, and whilst this may seem unnecessary and annoying, patients see such an increase in their oral health and the state of their teeth following treatment because of this very reason.  And this can only mean you’ll smile even brighter when you’re done.

You’ll have to clean your aligners

Keep your aligners pristine and clean by using a soft toothbrush and anti-bacterial soap (or Invisalign cleaning crystals) daily. Avoiding doing so can wreak havoc on the underlying teeth, which you’ll want to keep in tip-top condition, ready for when the aligners are removed.

You must wear your retainers as instructed

Treatment is not over once you’ve finished with your aligners. You’ll need to wear retainers to maintain your results and keep your teeth in their new positions. Follow your orthodontist’s instructions, or you might experience a relapse.
