Why a tooth extraction might be necessary

While our goal here at Mint is to keep your teeth as intact as possible, in some scenarios, our general dentists, periodontists or oral surgeons might have to carry out tooth extraction procedures to ensure the overall integrity and stability of your oral health.

Before pulling a tooth, we will perform all necessary assessments to evaluate your teeth, gums, and mouth and develop a treatment plan to best preserve them. However, when tooth extractions cannot be avoided, we go the extra mile to ensure the procedure is as painless as possible.

Here at Mint, our skilled and experienced specialist dentists are on hand to perform tooth extractions for several reasons, which include:

Irreparable tooth damage or decay

When tooth decay reaches the tooth’s centre (pulp), bacteria are produced, causing an infection. In most cases, root canals are used to help treat the infection. However, depending on the infection’s severity, a dental surgeon might recommend extraction to prevent the spread.

At Mint Dental, our expert dentists will examine the affected area and tooth and can prescribe the best dental solution moving forward. Whether it’s a root canal or an extraction, with Mint, you can trust that we will deliver the safest, most comfortable, pain-free procedure that best preserves your oral condition.

Severe periodontal disease

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums, bone, ligaments and other structures surrounding the teeth. In its early stages, periodontal disease manifests as gingivitis, a purely gum infection. However, the longer this goes untreated and ignored, the more severe your periodontal disease will develop and spread.

Mint Dental provides periodontal treatments delivered by gum experts that can restore the health of your teeth and gums and support tooth structure. We offer advanced periodontal therapy that can help prevent further dental issues and alleviate symptoms of gum disease.

In its most aggressive form, periodontal disease can cause teeth to loosen; in such cases, tooth extraction may be necessary.

With this said, tooth extraction will not cure gum disease; however, we can begin treating the condition more precisely and replace the teeth with dental implants to prevent the vital bone structure from being lost.

Helping impacted teeth

When a tooth is impacted, it’s blocked from coming out, which is often the case with wisdom teeth.

In such cases, our dentist with a special interest in orthodontics, Dr Francesca Pantanali, might recommend removing the impacted tooth to prevent it from damaging adjacent teeth. By pulling a tooth this way, we also help minimise the risk of infection or overcrowding.

However, before making this recommendation, we will thoroughly examine the affected area because we are committed to delivering exceptional treatments and patient care.

Eliminate overcrowding

Tooth extraction for one or several teeth is often necessary in cases of overcrowding and class II malocclusion.

Often, when patients wish to undergo orthodontic treatment but there is no room for the teeth to shift and realign correctly, it may be necessary to remove teeth to create space.

Our dentists will examine how crowded your teeth are and accurately predict the amount of space needed to achieve better alignment.

Dental trauma or accidents

When sporting accidents or traumas occur, such as car collisions, we prioritise preserving the teeth, whether with bonding, crowns, bridges, veneers or implants. However, tooth extraction might be required, and other restorative methods prescribed in cases where the dental issue is beyond hope.

At Mint Dental, we don’t just offer crowns to prevent tooth loss; our implant specialists place dental implants that replicate natural teeth.

We can perform two types of tooth extractions

  1. Simple extractions: Usually performed on teeth in the visible portion of the smile under local anaesthetic.
  2. Surgical extractions: Often performed when teeth cannot be easily accessed or have not fully erupted or broken under the gumline. Surgical extractions are typically performed under general anaesthesia.

Tooth extraction is the last possible dental solution – consult with our specialists to understand why you might need one, or whether there’s anything we can do to save your smile.
