When does having a tooth pulled become necessary?

1. Excessive tooth decay where a cavity or crown is not applicable
2. Tooth crowding, where there are too many teeth in the mouth preventing you from straight teeth
3. The tooth has broken apart or become so severely damaged
4. A root canal has failed, and there’s no recommended next step
5. You still suffer from pain even after a filling, a crown, or a root canal

Procedure and recovery time

In the case of standard tooth extractions, the procedure is relatively simple and will not take up too much of your time. But if there’s one thing we know as caring dentists, it’s that often many patients feel very nervous to have their tooth pulled, so we always take the time to explain how the procedure will go; you know what to expect and what to not to be fearful of.

Following the first day after a tooth extraction, you’ll quite quickly become used to the new gap in your mouth, but you must be careful not to run your tongue over the empty area in case you dislodge a blood clot. Nevertheless, you should schedule some time to rest to give your body the best chance of healing and to recover quickly.

Aftercare instructions to make the process easier:

1. You can use an ice pack on your cheek following the procedure to reduce swelling / but only use the ice pack for 10 minutes each time.
2. You’ll want to leave the gauze on for three or four hours following the procedure.
3. Don’t jump into your regular routine immediately; take some time to rest.
4. Don’t use a straw within the first 24 hours or smoke.
5. Prop your head up with pillows when lying down.
6. For the next week, only eat soft foods like yoghurts and puddings.
7. Use salt and warm water to rinse your mouth and reduce the chance of infection.
8. Pain is normal, but if it does not go away after several days, be aware of the signs of infection, including fever, pain, pus or drainage.
