One-Tooth Denture Types

Single-tooth dentures, or single-tooth removable dentures, are often referred to as a partial denture or a flipper tooth, as it’s a common, affordable solution for replacing a missing tooth.

However, when it comes to choosing types and materials for a single-tooth denture, patients don’t actually have that many options.

Each one-tooth denture type offers the same function, relying on either remaining teeth for their grip and stability.

However, there are a few different materials to select from, which include:

1. Acrylic plastic dentures from £350

  • Material: Lightweight plastic
  • Longevity: 1-3 years
  • Aesthetic score: 6/10
  • Best for: A cost-effective option that’s best for short-term solutions

Acrylic dentures are the most basic and cost-effective single-tooth dentures that money can buy.

They are lightweight, easy to make and arguably one of the most popular solutions to replace a single lost tooth – even though they’re a better temporary option while waiting for more permanent techniques like dental implants or bridges.

2. Flexible dentures from £450

  • Material: Nylon-based, thermoplastic resin
  • Longevity: 5-7 years
  • Aesthetic score: 8/10
  • Best for: Lightweight, more comfortable and better-looking single-tooth denture

Flexible dentures are known to be more comfortable than their acrylic counterparts, making them a good option for patients wanting partial dentures that fit better and look more discreet.

They’re also hypoallergenic and more wear and tear resilient, making repairing them more challenging.

3. Metal-based dentures (Cobalt Chrome) from £850

  • Material: Cobalt-chrome or titanium framework with acrylic/composite teeth
  • Longevity: 10+ years (best for durability)
  • Aesthetic score: 7/10 (metal parts might be slightly more visible)
  • Best for: Long-term solution for partial tooth loss

Metal dentures are regarded for their strength and durability, making them an excellent long-term solution due to their metal framework, ensuring great stability when chewing and speaking (because with dentures, it’s not always about aesthetics).

However, the metal portions of the denture might be visible in some cases and cost more initially compared to alternatives.

4. Composite dentures from £350

  • Material: Composite resin for teeth and gums
  • Longevity: 5-8 years (resistant to wear and discolouration)
  • Aesthetic score: 9/10 (best for natural-looking appearance)
  • Best for: Visible single tooth replacement

Composite dentures are crafted from high-quality resin, which can closely mimic the appearance of natural teeth and gums, making them a visually appealing and attractive option.

They’re the perfect option for patients who want their one-tooth dentures to blend seamlessly with the rest of their teeth, and the composite materials are resistant to staining, further enhancing their aesthetic appeal.

However, in terms of durability, they are not as long-lasting as their metal counterparts. Therefore, we would advise against them for front teeth.
