Three optional routes for treatment:

  • Repairing the broken or debonded veneer.
  • Replacing the damaged veneer. Temporaries whilst you wait.
  • Rebonding the veneer that’s come loose or broken off.

In some scenarios, we can repair the veneer with bonding. But this will depend on the type of veneer you have and the extent of the damage.

For example, it’s simple to fix problems with composite veneers, whereas with porcelain, it’s not easy or always possible. Porcelain is, unfortunately, not a repairable dental material. If it cracks or breaks, it often requires total replacement.

However, we won’t know if we can save your current veneer without taking a look. Book an appointment for £75 to see what can be done today and the best next steps to restore your aesthetics. Explore our veneer types and prices.

Repairing veneers

It’s possible to repair by buffing away the damage and contouring. If not possible, there’s a chance we can use bonding to save the tooth.

Reattaching veneers

If the veneer is intact and in good condition, we might be able to reattach it. But in most cases, it’s better to replace the veneer.

Replacement veneers

If your veneers are old or broken, we can replace them with new ones if the underlying tooth remains undamaged.

Broken veneer costs

Please note if you require a new porcelain veneer, it can take up to three weeks and three appointments, but temporaries are available during this time. “Immediate” composite veneers, however, only take one hour.

Broken Veneer advice

Don’t try to manage your veneer at home. Replace it safely with cosmetic dentists.

Broken veneer causes
  • From tooth grinding
  • As a result of biting down hard into hard foods
  • Due to tooth decay behind the veneer
  • From a sudden blow or impact to the face
  • As a result of incorrect design and placement
The dangers of ignoring a broken veneer

As porcelain veneers involved removing a small portion of enamel to place, you should look into getting your veneer replaced as soon as possible. This is because the underlying tooth is more vulnerable and will be much more sensitive than you’ll be used to.

Ways to repair a dental veneer

If in rare cases, where the veneer has fallen off, loosened or detached from the tooth without breaking, it might be possible to rebond the tooth, or quickly attach it using dental adhesives. If the veneer is porcelain and sustained a crack, chip or break, there’s a slight possibility we can fix it. If not, a replacement veneer will be required.

The time it takes to replace a veneer

It usually takes one appointment to reattach a veneer, or to place a new one. However, the majority of the time is taken up through designing and custom-designing your new veneer, if you’ve opted for porcelain. Temporaries are provided with porcelain veneers during this time. Composite veneers on the other hand are immediate and sculpted in the chair.

Signs and symptoms you need a new veneer:

  • There are spaces/gaps between the veneer and gum
  • The veneer has chips, cracks or a fracture line
  • The veneers appear dark and discoloured
  • The veneer feels loose or rough around the edges

Patients should book an emergency appointment if their veneer has fallen off or broken, as the underlying tooth is exposed an can cause sensitivity due to enamel removal.
