Invisalign straightens teeth just like metal braces, except it uses invisible aligners to realign your smile in a more discreet, comfortable way.

Invisalign - the basics

In short, Invisalign is a modern way to move and realign teeth using a series of clear plastic aligners rather than metal train track braces.

Invisalign has the power to fix:

  • Crooked, misaligned teeth
  • Mild to severe malocclusions
  • Overbites, underbites, crossbites and open bites
  • Gappy smiles

There are different versions of Invisalign, which are used to target different smile and alignment problems.

Invisalign First is also available for growing smiles and young children.

Invisalign is successful in treatment many orthodontic problems, however, not everyone can qualify for treatment. For example, Invisalign is limited and can only close gaps no larger than 6mm. It will also be unable to correct complex orthodontic problems that might require surgery.

Invisalign First exists to provide young, growing mouths the chance to straighten their teeth as they grow to avoid braces later in life.

Invisalign Teen is also available for teens, or versions like Invisalign Full can be prescribed to target more severe bite conditions.

Wearing invisalign

The aligners can be particularly tricky to spot, however, if you are up close they will be noticeable. Most Invisalign wearers find that they still have the confidence to smile, talk and socialise without any insecurities.

The aligners are less than one millimetre in thickness and removable, making them discreet.

Wearers should expect slight discomfort when swapping out their aligners for a new set – the feeling is comparable to a tightness as the teeth are progressed into their next position. But Invisalign offers an improved comfort compared to conventional braces as they do not need to exert more force on the teeth.

There’s no restrictions with what you can eat with Invisalign – this is because it’s recommended to take your aligners out when eating. However, wearers should brush their teeth after every meal to ensure their aligners stay clean and stain-free.

Clean your aligners nightly.

  • Use cold water and your toothbrush to remove any residue.
  • Soak the aligners with a tablet or crystal – but this is not a necessary step. It’s better to rinse your aligners with water every night.
  • Store your aligners in a protective case when not in use.

If you want to go the extra mile, Invisalign offers patients the chance to buy products like Steraligner, which is a natural antiseptic for the aligners.

For the best results and a successful outcome, patients should wear the aligners for the bare minimum of 22 hours per day.

The Invis process

Invisalign applies gentle pressure and a controlled force to different parts of the teeth during different points of your treatment. Teeth, with Invisalign, are gradually shifted, step-by-step, aligner by aligner.

  • Invisalign i7: 7 weeks
  • Invisalign Go: 3-6 months
  • Invisalign Full: 12-18 months

Invisalign i7 is the fastest Invisalign treatment, which straightens teeth from 7 weeks. However, it will only work for very mild cosmetic cases and is often used in conjunction with other cosmetic treatments.

  • Each invisible aligner is individually manufactured with 3D printing technology.
  • A special scanner called the iTero scanner is also used during your consultation, which will show you precisely how your smile will look at each stage of the journey, which means you can make adjustments to how your final smile looks.
